Important Principles of
Media Relations
A reporter’s words can make or break you in the public’s eye.
To avoid any media mishaps, follow these important principles of media relations:
1. Treat reporters as if they are your clients. They deserve as much respect
and timeliness.
2. Remember that most reporters work on deadline, so keep your commitments.
If you promise something to a reporter, deliver it.
3. Body language, eye contact, facial expressions and voice tone count
for 93% of face-to-face communication, so always keep them in check.
4. Be thorough in your preparation. Research the issues and practice your
key messages.
5. You can’t control the questions, but you can control the answers.
Use “bridging” to guide the interview and help you stay on track.
6. Keep it short and sweet. Answer questions with concise answers and don’t
repeat a negative question or comment.
7. Remember that you can’t take your statements back once they are
spoken. Everything you say is on the record.
